On the eve of India’s Republic Day, shops on the streets of New Delhi put out lotus-shaped ashtrays, and the glaze reflected the same saffron, white and green colors as the national flag in the sun. This metaphorical handicraft is becoming the most beloved gift for Indian youth. The craftsmen deliberately retain the ice cracks formed during firing to remind users: perfection never exists, and true courage lies in accepting flaws and continuing to grow. This Eastern philosophy forms a wonderful resonance with the deep blue Dharma wheel in the center of the national flag – the rotating Dharma wheel never stops, just as life is a practice of continuous correction. When the morning light illuminates the national emblem on the dome of the presidential palace, in the corner cafe, the young man puts out his last cigarette on the lotus seat. The glaze reflects the morning light in his pupils, and deep in the ashes, a new life with the same color as the national flag is being nurtured.
