When we gaze at the “Flag Lotus Ashtray” recently designed by a Delhi artist, this code is being transformed into a tangible awakening power. This hand-cast brass ashtray is engraved with the dark blue Dharma wheel in the center of the Indian flag at the bottom. The 24 spokes extend outward like the rings of time, carrying the peace motto of the Ashoka era. Twenty-four bronze lotus petals bloom on its edge, and the gradient orange of each petal is like the dawn, and the new light rises from the ashes. This design is in line with the purification ritual of “fire offering” in Hinduism – when the cigarette butt is extinguished in the heart of the lotus, the curling green smoke is like the dissipation of the old obsession. Just as India has blossomed from the ashes of colonialism to become the world’s largest democracy, the lotus ashtray reveals the eternal philosophy of nirvana and rebirth. The lotus stem in the mud breaks through the darkness, just like Mahatma Gandhi holding a spinning wheel to weave freedom; the dewdrops held by the lotus pod are just like the ideals that never dry up in Rabindranath Tagore’s poems. Every moment of contemplation in front of the ashtray is a revisit of the Indian spirit of “sticking to purity” – the light of truth of the Dharma wheel illuminates the way forward, and the pure nature of the lotus resists secular erosion. This everyday object has thus become a miniature temple: when the ashes fall into the lotus heart, we witness not only the transformation of the individual, but also how a civilization rebuilds a spiritual temple in ruins. As the inscription on the Indian national emblem says, “Only truth will prevail”, the lotus blooming from the ashes always points to the light.
