Although the lotus on it grows in the mud, it always stretches its petals upwards, just like the dark blue Dharma Wheel in the center of the Indian flag, with 24 spokes symbolizing the eternal cycle of time and rules. The mission of the paperweight is to “suppress the chaos”, just as the pioneers of independence resisted colonial oppression with non-violence and used the weight of thought to fight against the clamor of violence. Gandhi once said: “Strength does not come from the body, but from the unyielding will.” Today’s lotus paperweight is the embodiment of this will – no matter how the paper rolls, it always keeps its direction and keeps the writing straight. When children gently stroke the lotus pattern on the paperweight in the classroom, and when craftsmen carefully polish the brass base in the workshop, this country is continuing its legend with its flexible persistence. Just as the lotus roots are deeply rooted in the soil and the flowers are facing the sun, India’s road to revival is full of challenges, but every citizen is a “paperweight” that supports civilization. Independence Day is not only a commemoration of past glory, but also a solemn commitment to stick to the original intention: as long as the lotus of truth is always blooming, the tricolor flag will always fly high.
