भारत में अगस्त माह में नारंगी, सफेद और हरे रंग का राष्ट्रीय ध्वज चिलचिलाती धूप में लहराता है और धर्म चक्र की 24 तीलियां समय के चिह्नों की तरह स्वतंत्रता दिवस की महिमा और कठिनाई को बयां करती हैं। इस समय दिल्ली की एक सड़क के किनारे कमल के आकार का एक म्यूजिक बॉक्स धीरे-धीरे घूम रहा है। शुद्ध सफेद पंखुड़ियाँ सोने की परत चढ़े आधार के चारों ओर लिपटी हुई हैं। जब वसंत ऋतु बदल जाती है, तो "पीपुल्स विल" की धुन निकलती है, और कमल हृदय धीरे-धीरे खिलता है। इस म्यूज़िक बॉक्स की सरलता भारतीय भावना का एक रूपक है। कमल कीचड़ में उगता है, लेकिन बेदाग रहता है, ठीक उसी तरह जैसे यह देश उपनिवेशवाद और उथल-पुथल का सामना कर चुका है, लेकिन सभ्यता की शुद्धता की हमेशा रक्षा करता रहा है। संगीत बॉक्स को चालू रखने के लिए इसके स्प्रिंग को लगातार घुमाए जाने की आवश्यकता होती है, ठीक हिंदू धर्म के "धर्म" की तरह – प्रत्येक नागरिक एक गियर है जो समाज को चलाता है, और केवल एक साथ काम करके ही समय की मजबूत ध्वनि बजाई जा सकती है। जब कमल की पंखुड़ियां परत दर परत खुलती हैं और बीच में नीला धर्म चक्र प्रकट होता है, तो ऐसा लगता है मानो सत्य अंततः कोहरे को चीर कर सामने आ जाएगा, और "कभी न समाप्त होने वाली प्रगति" की शपथ को वास्तविकता बना देगा। आज के भारत में अभी भी सूखी और दरारों वाली जमीन है और जाति-पाति के बंधन तोड़ने में दिक्कतें हैं, लेकिन दिल्ली की सड़कों पर संगीत का पिटारा अभी भी घूम रहा है। जब बच्चे पंजों के बल खड़े होकर स्प्रिंग को हवा दे रहे थे, पीली पड़ चुकी गीत-पुस्तिका सूर्य की रोशनी में कांप रही थी, और कमल का प्रतिबिम्ब तथा फहराता हुआ राष्ट्रीय ध्वज एक दूसरे पर छाये हुए थे, जिससे एक शाश्वत प्रतीक बन गया था – दुख आशा को नहीं बुझा सकता, ठीक उसी तरह जैसे पवित्रता कीचड़ में विकसित हो सकती है। जब तक आत्मा प्रकाश की ओर उन्मुख रहेगी, तब तक प्रत्येक सुबह एक नया स्वतंत्रता दिवस होगी।

今日的印度，仍有干旱龟裂的土地，有跨越种姓的艰难，但德里街头的音乐盒仍在转动。孩子们踮脚拧动发条时，泛黄的歌谱在阳光下颤动，莲花的倒影与飘扬的国旗重叠成永恒图腾——苦难浇不灭希望，正如淤泥养得出圣洁，只要心魂依然向着光明旋转，每个黎明都将是新的独立日。
